About the exhibition:
The portrait of the well known Hebrew author Yosef Haim Brenner (September 11, 1881 – May 2, 1921) offers a fascinating study into the thinking process of the creator. The multiple perspectives of the deliberations which are manifested in Brenner's writings and biography, is an endless source of artistic challenge, in literature as well as in fine art. The exhibition at Schechter Gallery is a study into the artistic interpretation of the man and his philosophy.
Each of the artists in the exhibition is attracted to a specific feature in the authors life and the way he is portrayed. Brenner's story, and his untimely murder, are the base for the search for answers – what has really happened on that tragic day. This terrible and dramatic day, has attracted the interest of artistic work, some of which is on show in the exhibition.
The study of the additions and the attributes each artist adds to the Brenner's image, offers a new insight into the interpretation of the historic events. The mere fact that more than a century has passed and still artists are fascinated by Brenner's story. The myth and the image of Brenner generate a long lasting and significant interest.
The Schechter Gallery in Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv focuses on presenting exhibitions addressing issues of Jewish thought and its artistic interpretation in contemporary art. Brenner's philosophy and writing deal with the depiction of the human, social and cultural existence of the Jewish people, which is part of the galleries agenda.
