Fragile Nature Of Empathy

This interactive installation confronts empathy’s vulnerability. The word empathy, crafted from fragile mirror glass, is mounted on the wall and stands exposed within a target range. Air rifles (or stones) are placed nearby, inviting viewers to participate in a symbolic attack.

Can empathy survive conflict?

The lab became a combination of three things for me: a structure, a shelter, and a place of pleasant uncertainty. It’s impossible to separate the lab experience from the experiences of emigration and war that followed. Everything affects everything.

My presence in the lab broadened the context of what I was experiencing, and deepened my understanding of the culture and country I had arrived in. It all merged with my personal experiences and that of my family, creating new meanings, desires, and ideas. My identity was also affected, transmuting into something new and surprising, even to myself.
