Emotions, Perception and the Present

I use music as a tool to help look at one thing from different angles. I believe that music and sound are one of the shortest ways to affect both. The same event can evoke different emotions, depending on how it is presented.

Having worked mostly with music and sound I decided to explore how audio tracks with different moods determine a person’s perception of a given text.
Implementation: a person is brought to a small room alone, equipped only with headphones, a microphone, and a computer. The person is presented with two digital catalogs: one with texts (fragments from Tanakh) and another with musical clips representing different moods (dramatic, ironic, sad, epic etc.).

The person choses a combination of text and music, plays the track and reads the text aloud according to the feelings evoked by the music.
The speech is recorded. Then the action repeats with another musical track. Later on, the person can listen to the recordings and assess how the choice of music influenced the spoken text.

There is a questionnaire after, to enable the collection and analysis of data. Recordings can either be deleted or saved by the participant for further research.

After moving to Israel, questions linked to Judaism and my personal history began to feel much more acute and I searched for opportunities to study Judaism more deeply as a means of understanding life here. One of the issues that I was especially interested in was how Judaism deals with emotions and their expression, how its practice guides people to manage their state, determining a time and place for every manifestation and emotion. This topic became central in my own project.

Nemets Kirill is a musician and multi-genre artist. As of 2015 he’s been researching the connections between musical perception and emotional states, as a member of electronic (Zenith) and blues/jazz-rock (Babakaband, Paraskeva) bands. During his shows, which are not only musical but also theatrical, he tries to encourage people to engage in emotional exploration. Eclectic solo album Arrival/Departure was released in 2022. In 2023 he wrote music for a short film on the religious story of Lot and his daughters. Since late 2023 he’s been creating music and sound design for Israeli theaters.
